Join us Monday afternoon at the Convention for a special 45th GAGC Convention Anniversary celebration with Dr. Sally Krisel. Dr. Sally Krisel has been involved with GAGC for over 40 years; she is a Past-President and lifelong advocate for gifted pedagogy for all students. After teaching and leading in public and private schools for many years, Dr. Krisel served as Program Coordinator at the UGA site of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented (NRC/GT) from 1990-92. She worked to transform the landscape of gifted education as the team researched and implemented the multiple criteria gifted identification procedures in Georgia with the express purpose of finding gifted underserved students. For the next ten years, from 1996-2006, Dr. Krisel served as our state gifted coordinator, training educators across Georgia about the often-overlooked talents in diverse populations. In 2006, Dr. Krisel came to Hall County Schools, integrating gifted pedagogy to develop all students’ academic potential. She helped create and develop 30 charter schools, magnet schools, and specialized programs, all of which feature high-end learning opportunities and pedagogy once thought to be the exclusive domain of gifted education. She spent many years as part-time faculty in the Gifted and Creative Education Program at the University of Georgia (UGA) and has served five terms on the NAGC Board of Directors from 2009-2021, including NAGC president from 2017-2019. She has been recognized for her work in promoting both equity and excellence in gifted education by NAGC, GAGC, UGA, and the U.S. Department of Educations’ Office for Civil Rights. Although she is humbled and honored by these recognitions, the most special to her is the GAGC Mary Frasier Equity & Excellence Award. Dr. Krisel’s entire career is a manifestation of her belief that looking at all students from a proficiency view will provide the most accurate assessment of their extraordinary, and often hidden, abilities. She has dedicated her career to helping educators understand how to find, reach, and teach gifted students who may be twice-exceptional, from underserved or diverse populations, from poverty, or from households who do not speak English by implementing innovative and creative approaches that transform the lives of teachers and children. | Sally Krisel |
